Funny Get Well Wishes
Be careful with writing anything funny, because the message could come across as uncaring or offensive. It's best to only use humor if it is accompanied with something meaningful, so also include a quote or encouraging message.

• I know that chemo has made you lose your appetite for sweets. As your friend, I'm willing to make a huge sacrifice and eat your dessert. I know you'd do the same for me!
  
• You are one of the toughest people I know. I can't believe cancer would dare to think it stood a chance against you. I feel sorry for the cancer.
  

What to Write for Someone with Cancer
Figuring out what to write for someone with cancer can be a little tricky. The problem is that cancer is such a tough diagnosis that it's more difficult to be optimistic. Many things could be offensive, so using tact is imperative.
Keep in mind that a person who has cancer may be feeling many different emotions such as fear, anger, or grief. Use a message that will help with these strong and difficult feelings.

What to avoid writing:

• Anything related to dying: Even though the person may have a terminal diagnosis, it's not helpful to try to rush the person into losing hope.
• Advice: The person doesn't need advice. You haven't likely been through exactly what the person has gone through, even if you have had cancer. You also should avoid writing any medical advice that you think you know, unless you are a physician who specializes in the treatment of the specific type of cancer.
• Sermons: Include a comforting Bible verse if you have one that works well, but now is not the time to mention that the person is being punished by God for sin in his or her life. Never bring up lifestyle choices such as smoking or poor diet.
• Mean Jokes: Assume that humor could be taken the wrong way. If there's a way it can be taken in an offensive way, then it's best to write something else. Even if you're good friends, being insensitive is not a good idea. Humor can be effective if done with tact, so don't totally throw out the idea.

What to Include:

• Offer to help: Be specific about ways you can help. If you're a friend, offering to bring some food and a movie to the person's house may be perfect.
• Something Positive about the Person: People feel good when they are recognized for their good qualities. Say something that will boost the person's ego a little.
• Something Funny: Humor can ease pain, increase immune function, and lower stress levels. It really is medicine, so use it appropriately. Of course, the joke needs to be light-hearted. Inside jokes work great.
