Easy Way to Slide Plastic Piece Over Fish Tank Lid

Topic : I need inspiration on a plexiglass Fish tank cover or DIY custom lids. The black plastic ones arent for me drop pics if you have any? The reason I want plexiglass is because it's clear and the light can shine through it. The black ones have to have waterproof lights glued to the inside. I don't like that. Need some help on this one.

Posted by Haley K : I bought plexiglass cut to size for one of my tanks… It warps on a daily basis. I'm constantly flipping it over so it warps the opposite way. I'm not sure if the plexiglass isn't thick enough or if it's due to the water/heat combination or what it is. I wish I would have done glass. I thought it would be safer with the plexiglass, but didn't expect it to bend all the time. I would buy a glass one online. Here is a pic and link to one I bought:

I build my own. I just started using the PVC trim boards (earlier ones were made using rigid foam) and that works great. Mine are between eight and 9.25″ tall with a ledger around the upper half and a clear piece of acrylic caulked into that. This gives the fish room to jump should they feel the need to without hitting the glass/acrylic. I put a door on the front that I can open to feed the fish or work in the tank. The PVC will last forever and not rot or decay. I got a really good deal a while back on the AZEK 9.25″ PVC at Lowes for $6 a board.

I go to the local mom n pop hardware and have them cut me glass tops cost anywhere from 15 to 40 just depends on how big and how many cuts.

I have the Marineland glass canopies on all my tanks and I highly recommend them. Although they have raised their prices on them recently, you might can find them cheaper elsewhere.

I got a 36 gal but it has no hood! How much would it be to get a hunk of plexiglass?

Or other cheapish alternatives?

I found out plexiglass is very expensive! Glass is cheaper but not sure if that's the case with a bow front.

It honestly looks like a curve 38 gallon tank, you can probably find a lid online at PetSmart or MarineLand website.

We made all of ours. Our 75s (We don't have any 55s) have glass panes with a small gap for air lines and that so you can open them, but these days we make all of ours out of polycarbonate/plexiglass. We are able to buy large sheets at a local surplus place for about $10, I can make one 55 or 75 gallon cover out of that or three 10 gallon covers. Super cheap, won't break, lasts forever, easy to make. Only tools you need are a sturdy box cutter (or a plexiglass knife) and a spade bit for your drill to cut finger and air line holes.

You can usually find a piece 12″x24″ for around $20. Depends on thickness.

Has anyone found a glass lid that works for the Top Fin 5.5 gallon tank sold at petsmart? The traditional glass versa top doesn't fit because petsmart has to be difficult for some reason. I recently decided to put a new light on my tank and the solid top just doesn't suit my needs anymore. My DIY attempts at making one out of plexiglass are failing horribly and I'm getting super frustrated. Any help would be appreciated.

How are you cutting the plexy?

Tried scoring it then bending/hitting till it breaks, like you would with glass, that ended up with it breaking in random directions. I tried cutting it with sheet metal shears, basically exploded into shards every cut. Tried my crappy dremel with a cutting disc, disc kept shattering. Idk if it's me or if it's the plexi… but something is off in this equation.

When cutting plexiglass you can use regular wood cutting tools to cut it….and TAKE IT REALLY REALLY REALLY SLOW

That was my failure in the past I get really excited about how good it looks seed up and snap

I got a piece of glass cut at the hardware store and stuck a handle on it. It cost $5 total.

Maybe try contacting a reptile enclosure company and they can many help you out?

This is the one that was recommended on Amazon. Thank you so much! They only linked a foster and Smith one and unfortunately Petco bought them out and shut down the site.

What's the dimension of the inside of the rim?

All Glass or another glass and mirror company in your area can custom cut whatever you need.

Hi everyone! What do you use to attach plexiglass to itself, & to plastic? I do not believe silicone will work for my purposes as it is not an aquatic project. I am having difficulty finding information for non-toxic options, and fish people are the best I know at working with plexiglass. Thanks!
